An appeal has been made to the European Parliament (EP) to condemn Algeria’s use of energy resources for political ends.
This call was launched by MEP Dominique Bilde, following the announcement by Algeria of the unilateral cutoff of gas supply to European countries via the Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline (GME).
Calling on the European Commission, the MEP recalled that the Algerian unilateral decision took place in a context of tensions between Algeria and Morocco, relating in particular to the question of the Sahara.
And to question whether Brussels would condemn Algeria’s likely use of energy resources for political ends.
Algeria’s announcement of its decision not to renew the GME deal is fueling concerns in Europe amid rising energy prices and approaching winter.
This unilateral decision is considered by many European observers and politicians as blackmail on the part of Algiers towards Europe, in a context of tension fueled by Algiers around the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
