A “prenuptial training” before any marriage in Morocco

-

In Morocco, people wishing to get married will have to take new steps before concluding the marriage contract.

The bride and groom will have to follow a prenuptial training which will be provided by the adouls and obtain a certificate of aptitude for married life, reports the weekly La Vie Éco. This is a necessary step to take before concluding the marriage certificate. It is a project financed by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) which has signed an agreement with the National Order of Adouls. It is modeled on the Canadian model.

The pilot phase of the project is training (strategic communication) focused on raising the awareness of future married people, young people and their families, of duties and rights. In Oujda, some young people have already received this training. According to a member of the National Order of Adouls, there is no question of carrying out this process before marriage. For now, it is not mandatory. In addition, it is planned to organize training for the benefit of 340 adouls in six regions who will, in turn, train the bride and groom.

This project is already receiving criticism. “The principle of wanting to make young people aware of duties and rights is in itself commendable, especially since sex education is a taboo in Moroccan society,” says the specialist, considering however that entrusting this mission to adouls “ is not judicious insofar as the latter envisage their roles on a conservative register which is a matter of a restrictive interpretation of religion”. According to him, this mission must be entrusted to the school.
