Official statistics: Moroccans have more than 31 million bank accounts

Official statistics revealed that the number of bank accounts that Moroccans have at the end of 2021 reached about 31 million and 200 thousand accounts, an increase of 5% compared to the year 2020.

These bank accounts belong to 17.5 million people, of whom 16.9 million are personal persons, 63 percent of them are men and 37 percent are women, while the number of accounts of legal persons is about 600,000.

About 7.7 million Moroccans have one bank account, 4.3 million have two accounts, and more than 3 bank accounts belong to more than 3.5 million Moroccans, of whom 552,000 have five accounts and more.

Bank Al-Maghrib stated, in statistics published today, Thursday, that the year 2021 witnessed the opening of 2.3 million new bank accounts, compared to 2.1 million new accounts in 2020.

Check accounts dominate a share of about 63 percent of the group, then savings accounts with 30 percent, and current accounts with a 4 percent share. While accounts in foreign currencies represent a percentage not exceeding 0.3 percent.

Bank Al-Maghrib indicated that the rate of availability on a bank account reached about 53 percent at the end of 2021, which means the number of citizens with at least one bank account out of the number of adult citizens residing, which is the same percentage recorded in 2020.

The rate of availability on a bank account by gender decreased from 67 percent to 66 for the adult male population, while it remained stable in the range of 40 percent for females.

The age group between 40 and 45 years for men remains the highest in terms of the availability of bank accounts, and for women, the age group is between 50 and 55 years.
